Social Justice

What is Social Justice?

If you Google "what is social justice," over 1 billion results populate. In today's world of heightened awareness of social injustices, it is hard to nail down one definition of what social justice looks like. I have come to realize that that is the point. Justice is not a "one size fits all" idea. It's not even a "one size fits most" idea.

Social justice can be approached from â€‹hundreds of different viewpoints, theories, and faces. Conceptions of justice have existed since history was written, from religious texts and ancient philosophers to modern advocates and activists. Justice can be harmonious, retributive, balanced, distributive, restorative, non-distributive, punitive, relational, among others models. Justice can address exploitation, violence, powerlessness, marginalization, and cultural imperialism.

I am still working to discover what justice looks like for me. By majoring in Social Justice, I have been able to understand more about what a more just world looks like and how I can help to create one for us all.
